After receiving about my 15th call is as many weeks from a distraught Association Executive telling me they just been fired, mostly for irrational and indefensible reasons, I just had to get my thoughts down to see what we can do to fix this systemic problem. I wrote an article entitled Why are so many of our strongest Association Executives getting fired?, about the ill-fated careers of many amazing Association staff leaders. The article and a subsequent one entitled How Volunteer Leaders can Avoid Inadvertently Firing Top Notch Association Executives created a flurry of conversation. On Tuesday, August 27th we will be hosting a workshop to discuss this alarming trend.

As an executive recruiter and HR consultant I have facilitated resolutions and built processes to help resolve and prevent sticky misunderstandings between the CEO and Volunteer Leaders.  We have written extensively about creating rules and policies that defend against sexual harassment and hostile work environment challenges.

Several of our clients have asked us to help them develop systems and processes for activating strategic plans into measurable programs. We have worked side by side with clients to clarify the priorities of the organization and to align everybody’s energy around the programs that will significantly improve the value of the organization.

On this interactive workshop we’re going to discuss what we believe are some of the causes of AE’s misfortunes and see if we can find some ways to address this important problem moving forward.
