What does ChatGPT say about you and your company?
Every company and every executive needs to open a new Chat on the most popular Generative AI Chatbots – Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI, and ChatGPT – and enter two prompts. First, ask these Chatbots about your company. Second, ask these Chatbots what they know about you.
With the recent addition of live search now built into ChatGPT (see next story), these actions today are crucial. Search is shifting, and how people find and learn about you and your company is becoming more dependent on your digital footprint than ever.
You must know what Gen AI knows and says about you, your firm, and your products. You need to benchmark what it is saying, what is right and what is wrong, so you can find ways to correct and influence future results.
A lack of a digital footprint makes you invisible to AI. That’s bad, but what is worse is that the absence of a carefully curated digital footprint leads to inaccuracies, emphasis on the wrong things, and even hallucinations.
Fixing mistakes
In January, we wrote about the importance of every company creating and curating its digital footprint in REAL AI’s lead story, “No PR? AI will make you a ghost.” We discussed how a proactive PR and communications program protects your company from being a ghost to AI. A PR program creates a digital footprint for you and your company to ensure they not only exist to AI but use your words and messages that best describe you and your company. Without it, someone else is determining your messaging, or if AI can’t find you, you can’t be part of its search results.
Benchmark what AI says
Use this exercise to create an initial benchmark of where your messaging is about you and your firm. Save it; you can use the results as a starting point in your roadmap to improve your prompt results, especially information that AI is missing. It can also help you tactically address falsehoods, mistakes, or dated information.
You can curate your digital footprint by creating a constant flow of information published on credible, well-established sources – like reputable news outlets, industry-specific sources, and established websites (including your own). With live search, creating ongoing and new communications that showcase your core messaging – from news releases to published articles and blogs – you will influence how Gen AI Chatbots will describe you. ChatGPT Search is another game-changer
ChatGPT added new live search capabilities last week. Dubbed SearchGPT, when a prototype was introduced in July, ChatGPT Search now is built into ChatGPT today. There is no separate URL to go to.
It uses search when a prompt requests up-to-date or precise information that may not be in ChatGPT’s knowledge base. For example, if you ask about current events, a stock price, or a sports score – and other real-time data-related requests – ChatGPT will use search to retrieve the more current information needed. Niche questions – specifics about a local event or something that is not widely known – may also invoke a search response.
One of the best benefits of this new search capability is when you get a result and, in your follow-up prompt, you ask ChatGPT to cite the source in the original reply, which provides a direct link.
Google search vs. ChatGPT search
Months before ChatGPT integrated search, I started using Google search less and less. I’ve been a Google search guy since it came out in Beta in the fall of 1998. However, with the ChatGPT app on my phone, speaking to ChatGPT to answer questions was far faster and more accurate than using Google Search.
I recently demonstrated in a webinar I hosted for real estate journalists the power of ChatGPT versus Google, and this was before the live search was available in ChatGPT. The superpower of ChatGPT is filling in the missing puzzle pieces. Even if you have just a few pieces of information, ChatGPT can often figure out what you are looking for versus having to undertake multiple Google searches to come close to the same results.
Advantage ChatGPT
While search is integrated into the free and paid versions of ChatGPT, spend $20 a month for the current paid version. Why? Speed, accuracy, depth of analysis, consistency, and reliability are all better with the paid version than with the free version, according to ChatGPT itself.
Personal assistants
Will ChatGPT be a Google search killer? Time will tell. But as all these Gen AI tools improve, the promise of AI Agents or personal assistants comes closer to reality. 2025 will be the Year of the AI Agent, and ChatGPT just showed me how quickly I can abandon a tech I’ve used for decades for something that works better and is more convenient.
