OpenAI is funding Axios’ local expansion
We subscribe to nearly a dozen AI newsletters, but by far and away, our favorite AI news comes from Axios.
Now Axios is making AI news of its own: OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, announced this week they will fund four new local Axios newsrooms.
This is unique, as most media deals that Google and others have struck have been content-focused, but funding a media outlet’s expansion is unique.
Axios may be the news media powerhouse you have never heard of: they have on-the-ground reporters in 30 US cities, soon 34, and targeting 100. Already, they publish 48 free newsletters with 3.3 million unique subscribers. Axios probably has more unique subscribers than many local newspapers in the markets they operate!
Why should real estate agents care? We watched agents flock to new social media channels because, for many people, that’s where they get their news.
The Axios-OpenAI deal includes:
- OpenAI’s technology won’t write stories but will “build a system for creation, distribution, and monetization of our journalism,” according to an Axios memo to employees.
- OpenAI gains access to Axios content and can provide answers for ChatGPT Search, featuring links to Axios articles.
OpenAI and Google have inked deals with numerous top media outlets, but this one hints at this: As these Gen AI engines get more powerful, smarter, and current, will they be the future source for where we get our news? It seems likely to us.
So, if you are a real estate professional in one of the markets where Axios Local is, you need to subscribe here – today – scroll down to “Local” and see if they are in your city.
If you have ChatGPT Plus, Teams, or Pro, you now have access to a clever new feature: Tasks, a reminder feature.
Go to the pull-down menu at the top left: “GPT-4o with scheduled tasks – ask ChatGPT to follow up later.” You can ask it to remind you three months from now to do something. It will schedule up to a couple of dozen tasks and notify you, even by email.
Well, so can Alexa and even Siri. But this move hints at what’s to come and is important to watch as ChatGPT might morph into “agentic” land: more of a helpful assistant than just an expert bot or content generator.
We even hear the code name for a more full-feature ChatGPT-powered AI Agent called “Operator.” Rumors tell us Operator might just book your 2026 vacation.
We can see that OpenAI has an inside track to creating a digital assistant that can go beyond giving us reminders, answering our questions, and writing great limericks and haikus.
Imagine if it could streamline your day by sorting your mail and texts and flagging the most important ones, then drafting responses for your approval like Apple Intelligence, which is promising. OpenAI may be a significant contender as it can already expertly learn our priorities, likes, and dislikes.
With Google also firmly in this space, we are rapidly seeing early proof that 2025 is going to be the year of the AI Agent or agentic (uh-JEN-tik) tech.
