The entire real estate industry is retiring!

I was reviewing the 2010 National Association of REALTORS Member Profile today and noticed a very alarming fact!  The real estate industry is retiring! Not only has the average age of REALTORS moved from 51 to 54 year old.  While the number of REALTORS that are 60 or older has risen 32% in the past four years, the number of REALTORS that are 39 years old and younger has actually DECREASED 21%!   Not only is the industry concentrated on those that are nearly retirement age, we are LOSING those that are in their prime producing years!   Most MLSs and Associations [...]

Looking to build your MLS Brand Recognition? Try driving it around town!

In much of the research we conduct on behalf of MLSs we see a disturbing, but consistent trend. Many agents are not aware of their MLS or the services they provide for them. When asked who owns the MLS, we often hear “some third party company", “my association” or in many cases “I don’t know".  Many agents have more brand recognition of their MLS system itself,  than they do of the MLS organization. Here’s a few tips to think about how to dial up your brand recognition with both agents and consumers. MRIS, the largest MLS in the country located [...]

Come join me at the 4th Annual AFIRE Conference

Many of you have probably heard me “gushing” over the years about the AFIRE Conference.  AFIRE or Awesome Females in Real Estate is a one of a kind conference for female executives in the real estate industry.  They say it’s “lonely at the top". This conference provides executives and business owners with a safe place to talk about the issues they are facing in their businesses without their staffs or boards in the room.  I have forged some of my closest relationships in the business at this conference. I have been honored to spend time with some of the most [...]

The Power of Benchmarking – MFRMLS Experiences New Heights in Customer Satisfaction

The Power of Benchmarking WAV Group strongly believes that you cannot accomplish what you cannot measure. How do you know if your customers are loyal fans and would recommend you to others? By asking them, of course.   And not just asking them on occasion, but every time anyone in your organization connects with them in any way. We have witnessed significant improvements in customer satisfaction when a MLS regularly measures satisfaction levels and then, of course, continues to improve in the areas where they have received suggestions for improvement. Why does satisfaction matter? After all MLSs for the most part [...]

Divided we get conquered!

Can’t we all just get along? Last week at Inman Connect in New York City, I was invited to share the Top 5 questions MLSs should address in the next year.  I reserved one of my five points to one of the key dysfunctions I have observed in our industry - Internal Squabbling.   As the market gets tighter and budgets gets strained, we see more and more examples of discord between real estate organizations supposedly all designed to serve the needs of real estate professionals.  In some regions we see local real estate associations engaging in predatory practices, trying [...]

Zillow and Agent Ratings

WAV Group has been talking about Agent Ratings for a long time now. We published a white paper on the topic in December of 2008. Around the internet, everything gets rated - consumer products and services of every type. It was not a terribly hard forecast to imagine that someone would emerge to become the epicenter of the Agent Rating. There have been a number of successful efforts in Agent Ratings - perhaps the leader in the space has.been QualityCertified or QSC.  They pioneered the landscape and have a methodology of insuring that real customers give real ratings. To my knowledge [...]

How about a new real estate organization to separate the wheat from the chaff?

Lani Rosales at Agent Genius.com wrote an interesting article about whether there are too many REALTORS in the market at this point. While I understand why many would suggest that the market may, in fact, be oversaturated, I would argue that NAR serves a valuable purpose as a political organization. The more members, the more influence.  There’s nothing wrong with its role as THE advocate for the real estate industry. Instead of trying to revamp NAR, I would love to see a new organization meant only for top producers and  highly trained professionals new to the industry. The entry stakes would be [...]

Attention Buyers Agents – Do not Give Away one of your Most Valuable Marketing Tools!

Are we going to give yet another marketing advantage away to third parties? Hard times call for hard measures….we need to be aggressive as we can and leverage every marketing tool available to us.  We need to provide consumers with the information they require.  To stay at the center of the transaction real estate pros need to provide consumers the information they want in the way they want it. What is the one of the most important marketing tools top producers can provide -  feedback from past clients. As noted in the WAV Group paper entitled Your Secret Weapon, Your Reputation, [...]
